Cystectomy – Cyst Removal Surgery

The medical term for the procedure of removing cysts is called cystectomy. Surgeries for ovarian cysts can be performed both laparoscopically and through open surgery. The choice between laparoscopy and open surgery is planned based on the size and various characteristics of the cyst.

In surgeries for ovarian cysts, cystectomy is not always performed, meaning that only the cyst is not always removed; sometimes the cyst is removed along with the ovary (oophorectomy or salpingo-oophorectomy) or even with the uterus. For example, in the surgery for an ovarian cyst of cancerous type, the uterus is also removed along with the ovaries. In benign cysts, cystectomy may not always be possible. The entire ovary can be removed due to adhesions caused by the cyst’s surrounding tissues or the inability to visualize healthy ovarian tissue.
